The Bewitching Seaport of Salem
(full-day tour)
Monday, September 22
The site of the famous witch trials of 1692, Salem is also rich in maritime history as one of early America’s most important trading seaports. On the tour, you will see historic buildings, wharves, and the reconstructed tall ship Friendship at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. The trip begins at the Salem Witch Museum where you will learn about the superstition and mass hysteria that overtook the town in the late seventeenth century. You will watch a dramatic historical re-enactment of the witch trials using stage sets with life-size figures, lighting and narration. You will walk through Salem’s historic streets to the newly renovated Peabody Essex Museum, the oldest continuously operating museum in the country. Following a luncheon in the museum, you can tour its collection of art from around the globe or peruse original court documents from the 1692 Witch Trials in the rare books and manuscripts collection. The remainder of the afternoon includes free time to explore the charming shops that Salem has to offer in the vicinity of the museum.
