Historic Beacon Hill
(full-day tour)

Tuesday, September 23

Beacon Hill is one of Boston’s oldest and most elegant neighborhoods. As the location of the Massachusetts State House, it is the center of Massachusetts politics, and where many elite call home. John Hancock, Massachusetts’ first Governor, and the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence, owned much of Beacon Hill.

On this walking tour, you will start with an overview of Beacon Hill’s history at the Harrison Grey Otis House followed by a stop at the African Meeting House,  the oldest black church edifice in America.  Lunch will be served at the Hampshire House whose exterior was made famous by the long-running TV sitcom “Cheers.”  After lunch you’ll visit three private Beacon Hill homes.  Other tour highlights include Acorn Street, a hidden cobblestone lane lined by small homes, and Beacon Hill’s most photographed destination; Louisburg Square, a majestic European-style private square, featuring beautiful Greek Revival townhouses surrounding a lovely garden.  Louisburg Square is the current home of Massachusetts Senator John Kerry.  Other famous tenants have included author and critic William Dean Howells and Louisa May Alcott.  Louisburg Square was designed by Charles Bulfinch, architect of the State House; Charles Street, Beacon Hill’s fashionable shopping district; the North Slope, which features quaint walkways, cul-de-sacs, and charming nooks and crannies.  The North Slope played an important role in Boston’s active Underground Railroad.
